Morning gifts

What do you give, and what does the tradition mean?

A gift once given the morning after the wedding night. Older than the wedding ring as a symbol, yet just as personal. This is the story of the morning gift, and what people give today.

Long before the wedding ring became a given, there was the morning gift. A gift the groom gave his bride the morning after the wedding. The tradition dates back to the Middle Ages and is one of the oldest wedding traditions in the Nordic countries.

Back then it was about more than romance. The morning gift became the bride’s own property and served as financial security in a time long before pensions and social insurance, in an era marked by war and uncertainty.
Silver. Gold. Sometimes land or a small estate. Something of value that was hers alone.

From security to love.

Today the morning gift serves a different purpose. It is no longer typically an economic safeguard or legal contract. It is given to mark something far simpler: a person, a marriage and a symbol of everything new that has just begun.

But perhaps that is exactly why jewellery still feels like the obvious choice for a morning gift. Gold is made to last. Diamonds last forever. A ring, a bracelet or a necklace can be worn every day, put away and then brought out again. The material is still the same. And the piece now carries an immense meaning, a symbol of marriage.

The tennis bracelet, the morning gift that never needs explaining

A straight row of diamonds, set link by link, as natural for everyday wear as for evening. The tennis bracelet is perhaps the most recognisable of all morning gifts, and one of the most worn pieces of jewellery overall. It is classic and timeless and radiates an exclusivity that does not go unnoticed.

“Discreet by day. Impossible to miss by night.”

Tennis bracelets are not exclusive only because of their diamonds. The craftsmanship behind them is incredibly time-consuming, and restoring a tennis bracelet requires both time and patience. Every setting, claw and link needs to be checked individually for the bracelet to regain both its strength and its original character. It is work where the smallest details make the biggest difference.

Diamond Earrings

Diamond earrings have been worn for generations and come in almost as many expressions. From the simple diamond close to the ear to larger settings and more detailed designs. A pair of diamond earrings works with almost anything. They can be the little something you wear every day or the piece you bring out when there is something to celebrate.

And just like with many classic pieces, age matters less. Diamond earrings made thirty, forty or fifty years ago still carry the same diamonds. The setting can be restored and the gold polished, but the diamonds’ refraction and brilliance remain.

Something unique and personal

A morning gift doesn’t have to be a classic. Sometimes the more personal choice is a piece that doesn’t exist in a hundred identical copies. An older piece already has its own shape. The cut of the stone, the proportions of the setting and the details in the gold often tell you quite clearly when and how it was made. Those are things that are difficult, and sometimes impossible, to recreate.

With us, every restored piece exists in one single copy. It can be resized, engraved or otherwise customised for the person who will wear it. But it will not be copied and mass-produced. The piece already has a history. Whoever wears it next will build on that story.

The form of the morning gift has changed. The reason we give it has not.

A tennis bracelet. A pair of diamond studs. A piece chosen with one specific person in mind. Different expressions of the same thing: giving something that will stay long after the wedding day is over. At Hailey’s, many of our pieces already have a history. They have been worn, loved and part of a life before they come to us. Then they are restored, to be ready for the next. And perhaps that is exactly what makes them so perfect as morning gifts. A piece doesn’t have to be new to gain a new meaning. The moment it is given to someone you love, a completely different story begins.

An old tradition. A piece with a history. And the beginning of yours.
